Place a Hold

UCSC Books and Periodicals

Recalls-Books that are checked out may be recalled using either of the following methods:

In person-You may come to the Circulation Desk(McHenry or Science & Engineering) and place a recall.

Over the phone-You may recall books by calling either of the following numbers:

McHenry Library: 459-5185
Science & Engineering Library: 459-5300

Recalled books are due back 14 days after the date of recall. For example, if you recall a book on March 1st, the patron who currently has the book must return it by March 15th.

Holds on available books- .

If you are unable to locate a book that is not checked out, you may place a hold on it at the appropriate Circulation Desk (McHenry or Science & Engineering). A search will be instituted for the book, and you will be contacted as soon as the book is located.

Holds placed OnLine-You may place a hold on checked-out books online. The book will be recalled from the patron that has the book checked out. You cannot use the online hold function to place holds/searches on books that are listed as "Available" in the catalog. Those holds/searches can be placed at either Circulation desk.

To place an on-line hold, locate the book on Cruzcat, then click on "Place a hold." You will be prompted to enter your name, barcode, and PIN.

Your PIN is unique to the library, it is not your teleslug pin. It is created the first time you renew online. Whatever you enter into the "Enter you PIN" field the first time (provided it is 4-30 characters in length) will become your PIN. If you forget your PIN come to the Circulation Desk at either library and we can help you create a new one.

Books on hold for you will be kept at the Circulation Desk for one week.

Reserves

Holds may be placed on reserve material up to one day in advance. Holds must be placed in person at the appropriate Reserve desk (Science or McHenry) anytime the desks are open. Holds cannot be taken over the phone. A patron cannot place a hold on a book while s/he has it checked out. Reserve material may be renewed for an additional loan period if there are no holds placed on it. All reserve transactions must take place in person at the Reserve Desk where material was checked out.
