Reserves > ERes Course Page Information
ERes URL: http://eres.ucsc.edu If
you want the library to create and administer a course page for electronic
reserves in ERes please read the following. If you want to administer
your own course page please contact: Molly Ostrander, Science & Engineering
Library Reserves. rbs@library.ucsc.edu.
1) The Course Page Request Form
- You will need to fill out a form requesting that the library create
and administer a course page in ERes for your class. This form gives
us all the information needed to set up your course page. Documents
and web links are attached to this course page.
- You can obtain a copy of this form at the Science & Engineering
Library Reserves Circulation Desk. It is also available on the web at
http://library.ucsc.edu/services/reserves/eresltr.html
The link to the reserve book list (hard-copy reserves) online form is
also available at this website.
- The information required includes a password that students will need
in order to access the course material in ERes. This password is to
be given to the students by the instructor of that class ONLY. The password
limits access to the material to students in the class and enables the
library to place copyrighted material in the system. The library is
not authorized to give out the password. Please - do not write this
password on any papers (such as a syllabus) given to students.
- The password can contain up to 20 characters. It is not case sensitive.
- Please include the basics: e.g. course title, course number, instructor's
names, and email addresses (if you'd like students to be able to contact
you.)
- The course page can also include TA's names and email addresses and
your office hours.
- There is space on this form to include URL's and titles to web sites
you would like links to. These URLs can include links to articles in
e-journals. You can also email me URL's of any sites you want included
on your ERes page. Please include titles of the URL's.
- If you are having ERes link to a web site you created we recommend
that
you include a link to ERes on your page. This will enable students to
get
to ERes if they've gone directly to your page.
2) Copyright Compliance
- You will need to sign a copyright compliance form which states that
to the best of your knowledge what you are submitting complies with
the fair-use guidelines stated in Section 107 of the US Copyright Law.
This signed form enables us to place copyrighted material in ERes.
3) Document Guidelines
ERes is suitable for any material that can be photocopied.
Document Submission:
We scan documents as .pdf files and attach them to your course pages.
- Documents should be submitted at the Science & Engineering Library
circulation desk. You will need to fill out a form for each document.
Include a title (e.g. Lecture no. 01) and the course number (e.g. Biology
165). The form is available at the Science & Engineering circulation
desk.
- If you want to make a document available in both ERes and hard-copy
only one copy is needed for both.
- Documents can be emailed as attachments to mollyo@cats.ucsc.edu. They
will be converted to .pdf files and uploaded to ERes. If you are interested
in this process please contact Molly Ostrander in the Science &
Engineering Library.
- Material for ERes will be processed in the order that it is received.
At
the beginning of the quarter the turn around time for material going
into
ERes is 3-4 days; during the rest of the quarter it is 1-2 days.
The documents you submit should follow these guidelines:
- They must be on white, single-sided, clean 8.5 x 11 paper. Please
submit
pages that are typed or written in black or blue ink. Pencil and other
colored ink do not show up.
4) Articles or Chapters from Books
- If you are submitting material photocopied from another source (a
journal article, chapter from a book) the bibliographic citation must
be written on the first page of the document. This is true for both
ERes and hardcopy documents.
- Documents where two pages have been reduced to fit onto one page may
not
read or print well in ERes due to small print. Because of this we suggest
that this configuration be avoided.
5) Access to ERes
- In order to access .pdf files in ERes, users will need to have the
Acrobat Reader plug-in and the latest versions of either Internet Explorer
or Netscape as the browser downloaded on their computers. We recommend
the latest version of Acrobat Reader (v.5). All workstations at the
Science & Engineering Library, the MERC at McHenry Library, and
all computer labs on campus have these applications loaded.
- ERes course pages are only active for the duration of the course.
All material and course pages for these courses are deleted during the
week following finals.
