UCSC Library Privacy Statement

The Library of the University of California, Santa Cruz, is committed to protecting your privacy as a critical component of your intellectual and academic freedom on our campus. Your guarantee of privacy is supported by federal and state law, and by the privacy policies of the University of California and its Santa Cruz campus. The University Library limits the collection of personal information to what is relevant and necessary to conduct library business, e.g. your name, university identification, and items borrowed. We retain that information only as long as it is needed to complete transactions or provide service. Information in a personal library record is considered confidential and will not be released by the Library to a third party except by court order or legal search warrant.

While the library makes every effort to negotiate the protection of user information in licensing agreements with outside database vendors, the University does not govern the privacy practices of those vendors. Users, therefore, should read the privacy statement on each Web site to determine these practices.

WebTrends Tracking Cookies

The UCSC Library uses WebTrends On Demand to track site usage statistics. When you access our Web pages, the following user access information is automatically collected, strictly to inform us as to how the site is being accessed and used by visitors, in our continuing effort to refine the navigational structure and content of the Web site:

  • Client information—The Internet domain and Internet address of the computer you are using
  • Technical information—Identification of the pages, services, and links you access within our Web site; type of browser and operating system you are using; date of access; and the Internet address of the Web site from which you linked directly to our site

In order to collect this usage data, WebTrends On Demand places a 'cookie' on your computer for the purpose of generating usage statistics. A cookie is a small text-file stored on your computer that tracks usage data through the course of a visit to our Web site. The WebTrends cookie does not collect personal information (such as name, address, e-mail address, etc.), identify you personally, or create individual visitor profiles. Any individual information (such as IP address) will not be used for other than for the expressed purpose or distributed to any third party other than WebTrends, except by court order or legal search warrant.

Should you wish to prevent WebTrends On Demand placing a tracking cookie on your computer, go to the Preferences or Options for your browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) and specify that you do not wish to accept cookies. If your browser distinguishes between third- and first-party cookies, reject first-party cookies, as these are the only type used by WebTrends. For further information, see the WebTrends privacy policy.

If you have questions regarding the Library's privacy policy, please contact the Library Privacy Liaison (cherylg@ucsc.edu).
